Sometimes the best stories begin with a change of plans.
-
Nicole wasn't even supposed to be on the ski trip to Revelstoke, Canada. After someone else in the group was injured and had to cancel, she was invited at the last minute to take their place. What she didn't realize was that many of the people on the trip were longtime friends from Stryker—a company where she had also spent 13 years of her career. It was one of those moments that made the world feel surprisingly small.
-
Thankfully, among that group was Jon.
-
Our first conversation happened because of an old Stryker business card tucked into Nicole's luggage tag. Jon noticed it right away and used it as the perfect excuse to introduce himself. What started as a simple conversation over a shared connection quickly became effortless, as though we had known each other for years.
-
That evening at the ski house, Jon complimented Nicole's ski sweater. It was a simple moment, but one Nicole will never forget. She felt an immediate connection and couldn't help but think how incredibly handsome he was.
-
The next morning, Jon was up early. Chasing that childhood passion of his and carving fresh tracks while the rest of the group was still getting ready. We met up for lunch, and from that moment on, we were inseparable for the rest of the weekend. Between skiing, laughter, and endless conversations, we both realized something special was unfolding.
-
As the trip came to an end, there was one problem... they lived in different states. Most people would have let the weekend become a wonderful memory.
-
Nicole had other ideas.
-
Taking a leap of faith, she invited Jon to join her birthday ski trip to Utah just two weeks later. It was a bold invitation, especially so early on, but Jon took the chance too. That weekend in Utah confirmed what they had both started to feel in Revelstoke; this wasn't just a vacation romance. It was the beginning of something real.
-
Over the next year, they made long distance work, trading weekends between Boulder and Chicago. Every flight, every adventure, and every goodbye only made them more certain they had found something worth fighting for.
-
Eventually, Jon made the move to Chicago. Not just for new opportunities in a new state, but more significantly for a future with Nicole.
-
As our adventures continued, we returned to one of the places that had become so special to us; Deer Valley, Utah. It was there, at the St. Regis, where we had taken our very first photo together as a couple, that Jon got down on one knee and asked Nicole to marry him.
-
It was the perfect place to begin the next chapter.
In that very spot where that first photo had been taken. There was no crowd, no audience. Just the two of them, surrounded by the mountains, a place that had captured both of their hearts.
-
For Nicole, it was the most special and unforgettable moment of her life.
-
Looking back, it's impossible not to believe that some moments are simply meant to be. A last-minute invitation. An old business card hanging from a suitcase. A compliment about a ski sweater. A courageous invitation to another ski trip. Countless miles between Boulder and Chicago. And finally, a proposal in the very place where they first captured themselves together.
-
Our story began on a snowy mountain because of a series of beautiful coincidences. But everything that came after wasn't chance at all. It was two people choosing each other.
-
And now we start forever together.
